This site describes my efforts to chronicle my FISHER family roots beginning with Abel and Rachel (HOOWE) FISHER of Ireland. I began this project when my first child was born wanting to some day share with him a history of our family. I found a family history more wondrous than I imagined. The surname link above provides an index of Fishers and relations contained in the site. The page also provides the ability to search my database by name. The photos, histories, documents and sources links provide direct access to a variety of documents and references that chronicle the family's history. A short history of the family can be read here. Another interesting story is found in Mathias Fisher's Revolutionary War military service declaration that details his service in the war and as part of Lochry's Expedition. The document is noteworthy because it is one of the few accounts of the Expedition by an actual participant. In 1781, Colonel Archibald Lochry led a force of Pennsylvania militiamen down the Ohio River to attack the Shawnee, Delaware and Sandusky Indians. The force was ambushed and defeated near present day Aurora, Indiana. Most of Lochry's men died in the battle or were executed immediately afterward. Mathias was taken prisoner and held for several months as an Indian slave. He was later sold to the British and imprisoned near Montreal, Canada. Roughly thirteen months after the expedition began, Mathias escaped and returned to his family. Only he and perhaps ten others are known to have survived the expedition. Please contact me if you have any questions or comments concerning the site. Definitely contact me if you would like to exchange information. I'd love to visit with you. |
