Hazard man near death after attack 1941 "Perry County Judge Billie Baker said today Earl Crawford, 32-year-old Negro, had been jailed on a charge of striking and wounding Sam Kayior, 25, a white man, who is near death in a hospital. Baker said the attack occurred about 12:30 a. m. in the Louisville & Nashville railroad yards when Kaylor was walking with Mrs. Mary Lee Pelfrey, 19, who is separated from her husband. The girl also was injured, Baker said, but was released from the hospital this morning. Kaylor, a dry cleaning company worker, received a skull fracture and brain concussion, a hospital physician reported. Baker said a warrant had been issued for a second Negro, and Hazard Police Chief Dave Wooton said he believed Kaylor's beating and the slaying last Saturday of William (Uncle Billy) Combs, 71-year-old merchant policeman, were connected."
Prisoner moved for safety 1941 "Earl Crawford, 32-year-old Negro, was ordered transferred today to the Clark county jail at Winchester for safekeeping after Sam Kaylor, 25, a white man he was accused of beating, died in the Hazard hospital. Shortly after Kaylor's death, County Judge Billie Baker issued a warrant charging Crawford with murder, and at his examining trial he was held without bond for grand jury action. He was jailed last Thursday on a striking and wounding charge....Baker said Mrs. Pelfrey identified Crawford at the examining trial as one of two Negroes who attacked them. Kaylor, a dry cleaning company worker, never regained consciousness after receiving a skull fracture. Sheriff Justus Begley, whom Baker ordered to transfer Crawford, said the Negro seemed "nervous' but had not expressed fear of mob violence.
Hazard posts rewards for arrest of killers 1941 "City commissioners voted today to offer two $50 rewards for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the persons responsible for the slaying of William (Uncle Billy) Combs, 71, night merchant policeman, and Sam Kaylor, 32, dry cleaning company employee, both of whom died last week of fractured skulls."
Second suspect held 1941 "Police Chief D. Y. Wooton disclosed today the arrest of a second Negro in connection with the fatal beating March 5 of Sam Kaylor, dry cleaning company employee, near the Louisville and Nashville railroad yards. Wooton identified the prisoner as James L. Robertson, railroad section crew worker, and said the Negro was arrested last night at Chavies, 20 miles north of here. The officer said Mrs. Mary Lee Pelfrey, 19, who was with Kaylor the night he was beaten, would be asked if she could identify the man as the person - ho attacked them. Wooton said the prisoner admitted being in the railroad yards the night of March 5, but claimed he caught a ride on a freight train that left two hours before the beating."
Woman identifies assailant 1941 "Police Chief D. Y. Wooton said today Mrs. Mary Lee Pelfrey, 20, had identified a Negro held in county jail as the person who on the night of March 5 attacked her and fatally beat her companion, Sam Kaylor, with an iron rod. Wooton identified the man as James L. Robertson, 35, railroad section crew worker who was arrested Monday night at Chavies. The officer said also that Miss Melda Sparkman, 19, told him the prisoner "looked like" a man who attacked her on the same night on a Hazard street. Kaylor, a dry cleaning company employee, died of a fractured skull in a Hazard hospital."
Crawford held on murder charge 1941 "Earl Crawford, 35, Hazard Negro, was held to the grand jury by County Judge Billie Baker today on a charge of murder in the fatal bludgeoning of Sam Kaylor, local dry cleaning company employee, on March 5. Crawford was returned to jail in default of $5,000 bond."
Perry Man sentenced to life 1941 "A circuit court jury today convicted James L. Robertson, Negro, 28, of a charge of fatally bludgeoning Sam Kaylor, laundry employee, last March 5 and sentenced him to life imprisonment. Kaylor was beaten over the head in the Hazard railroad yards with an iron bar which City Policeman Bert Feltner said weighed 50 pounds and was two and one-half feet long. Mary Lee Pelfrey, 19, testified that she and Kaylor were walking in the yards at night when the defendant jumped from the entrance of an abandoned mine, struck Kaylor and raped her. Robertson claimed innocence." Robertson was later awarded a new trail. Before being tried again for Kaylor's murder, he was convicted in 1942 of another rape and murder in Hazard, sentenced to death, and electrocuted.
Acquitted and disappear 1942 In an article about a night of unrest in Hazard, an update on the murder of Samuel Kaylor: "Sheriff Cornett said Robertson denied orally that he killed Sam Kaylor here a year ago and placed the blame on Earl Crawford, Negro, who formerly lived here. Robertson was convicted of murdering Kaylor, but obtained a new trial and had been free on bond. Crawford disappeared after being acquitted in the same case." Robertson's second trial for the murder of Samuel Kaylor apparently never happened. Robertson was convicted of the murder of Bertha Lehman mentioned in this article and sentenced to death in Jun 1942. He was electrocuted in Aug 1942.
Obituary: Sam Kaylor 1941 The first paragraph of Sam's obit is fantasy. Samuel was assaulted and murdered in a train yard per articles above and below. The rest presumably correct: "The body was taken to Ravenna at noon today and from there will be sent to the home of Kaylor's father, James Kaylor, at Bend. Berides his father, Kaylor is survived by two brothers, Ed and Jerry T. Kaylor, both of Madison county, and two sisters, Mrs. Carlos Todd of Hazard and Mrs. Chester Keeton of Richmond. Burial will be at 2:30 Thursday afternoon in the family cemetery near Waco, the Rev. J. W. Parrish, pastor of the College Hill Methodist church, officiating." The "family cemetery near Waco" is presumably Kaylor/Rhodus-Moores Cemetery in Bybee.
